CONVERGENT THINKING TOOLS FOR FORMULATING CHALLENGES

After you have generated a variety of questions related to your challenges, it is time to converge and select those that resonate with you. As in all CPS decision-making situations, use the principles of convergent thinking (Apply Affirmative Judgment, Keep Novelty Alive, Check Your Objectives, Stay Focused) to help you with your selection. Sometimes, you will have an aha moment that is so strong that you know exactly which challenge statement gets to the heart of the matter. In fact, once you have identified your challenge, you may be ready to move immediately out of this step in the CPS process. At other times, you may need to sort through a variety of potential challenges before deciding where to go next. If the problem is complex, there may be subissues that you will need to tackle one at a time to clarify the situation even more. The convergent tools Hits or Highlighting (see Chapter 6) serve as well in convergence for Strategic Thinking as they do in other convergent phases of the process.
